Description
The United States is reportedly complaining its main Arab ally Saudi Arabia is not cooperating enough in two main areas: The combat of terrorism and its role in Iraq. "In both areas Saudi Arabia is not doing enough," intelligence reports from the oil-rich Arab kingdom said last week. During a recent visit to the Arab kingdom, former Vice President Dick Cheney, "presented the Saudi leadership a list of royalties and organizations who allegedly continue to make contributions to al-Qaeda," top on the U.S. list of terrorist organizations. "The Saudi leadership ignored the list, arguing they would not take strangling action that would provoke alQaeda to attack Saudi targets and cities," the reports said. As far as Iraq is concerned, the U.S. accuses Saudi Arabia of being "reluctant to be more active in peace-making efforts and stabilizing the situation in Iraq." "The Americans reportedly wish the Saudis would at least step into Iraq to help the Sunni community there. The Saudis prefer not to interfere directly in Iraq for the same reason," the reports said, adding, "This is partly why they decided to approach Syria on behalf of U.S. President Barack Obama's administration on the eve of his troop withdrawal from Iraq." Most published reports said last week's Syrian-Saudi summit in Damascus had discussed, among other things, the situation in Iraq with Washington's consent and approval.
